Sunday 13th of June saw the Super Rods make their annual trek to Swan Hill’s Sonic Speedway for their season finale, Hopper’s Crossings Shaun Walsh was able to take a come from the rear victory ahead of Moolap’s Shaun Toulmin and Cobden’s Matt Clark.
In the first heat of the night Walsh was able to greet the flag first after having a race long duel with Geoff Leigh, they were closely followed home by Clinten Scott. In heat two Toulmin was able to claim the win over Tim Rankin and Adrian Rieck.
Walsh again held out a determined Leigh in the heat three to take the win, with Jason Grayland home in third. The fourth heat saw Toulmin once again able to take the win with Rieck second and Rankin third.
Grayland led from green to checker in the fifth heat of the night denying Walsh a clean sweep of the heats beating home Leigh and Walsh. With the final heat of the night seeing Toulmin take highest points position on the night when he led home Rieck with Tom Duynhoven in third.
The line up for the twenty lap final saw Paul and Paul O’Shannassy making up the front row, followed by Damien Falkingham, Rankin, Duynhoven, Scott, Rieck, Leigh, Shaun Walsh, Shaun Toulmin, Jess Greegan who started off the rear as a rookie and Clark who opted to start from the rear after having a disastrous night having not finished a heat after suffering from oil leak problems. Unable to make the grid for the final were Dale Walsh who broke an oil pump drive in his motor, Gary Toulmin with major engine problems, Jemma Gale who had a misfiring magneto, Jason Grayland who disintegrated the starter flex plate, and Tim Rankin who was unable to repair his car in time after he suffered major damage in the final heat.
With racing under way it was Scott who made the best of the start and able to work his way through to the lead, Toulmin was able to follow Scott through the field and had moved into second after the first lap, they ran in this order until the ninth lap when a race stoppage saw the field reformed. From the restart it was Scott who led the way from Toulmin, but Walsh was in pursuit and the following lap he was able to move into second position before seizing the lead from Scott in lap twelve. Toulmin was also able to move past Scott in lap fifteen after Scott slowed dramatically as his car ran low on fuel, allowing Leigh to move to third position.
They continued in this order until the final with Walsh first to greet the checker followed by Toulmin, with Clark able to dive to the line to claim the final podium position by the narrowest of margins over Leigh. They were followed by Duynhoven, Falkingham, O’Shannassy and Singleton. In his acceptance speech Walsh thanked the Super Rod Association for the opportunity to race his hot rod with the class and he looked forward to racing with them full time next season.
This concludes the Super Rod racing for the 2009/2010 season, with the drivers looking forward to the Presentation dinner to be held on Saturday July 3rd.
