Saturday the 8th of May saw the Super Rods in action at Darlington’s Mid Western Speedway for the running of this Year’s Col Grist Memorial. Moolap’s Shaun Toulmin was able to make it back to back feature wins taking home the silverware ahead of Winchelsea’s Geoff Leigh and Cobden’s Dale Walsh.
The first heat of the night saw Leigh with an all the way win when was able to hold out Shaun Toulmin and Donald Morgan. It was an equally impressive run in the second heat by Jason Grayland who checker first ahead of Garry Toulmin and Walsh.
Heat three saw the positions from the first heat once again repeated with Leigh first with Shaun Toulmin second and Morgan third. In the fourth heat Grayland also was able beat home Matt Clark who had been able to repair his car after rolling in the second heat with Walsh home in third.
Shaun Toulmin was able turn the tables on Leigh in the fifth heat with youngster Jemma Gale claiming the third position. The Final heat of night saw Grayland make a clean sweep of his heats when he again led home Clark and Walsh.
The line up for the final saw high point scorers Grayland and Leigh making up the front row, followed by Shaun Toulmin and Walsh, Morgan, Garry Toulmin, Gale, Clark, Rob Richardson, Clinten Scott and Damien Falkingham. The only car unable to take his starting position was Paul Singleton who had sustained major damage during the heats.
Grayland charged to the front from the drop of the green, with Leigh and Shaun Toulmin left to battle for second position. On the sixth lap the race was brought to a halt the car of Garry Toulmin spun leaving race leader Grayland nowhere to go, this contact caused Grayland serious front end damage and eliminated him from the race.
At the restart Shaun Toulmin was able to work his way past Leigh to take the lead followed by Walsh, Clark and Morgan. Shaun Toulmin and Leigh engaged in a desperate battle for the lead over the next fourteen laps but Leigh was unable to advance. In the final lap Gary Toulmin once again spun causing officials to declare the race.
The final results saw the win go to Shaun Toulmin, Leigh, Walsh, Morgan, Gale, Falkingham, Richardson and Garry Toulmin. Toulmin was thrilled to have added his name to the history books add his name to the Honour Roll of winners of the Col Grist Memorial.
The next meeting for the Super Rods will be on Sunday 13th of June when they will travel to Swan Hill for their season finale.
