The Super Rods were in action on Saturday 30th January when they competed at Laang Speedway with Geoff Leigh continuing on his winning way taking out honours in the Super Rod Stampede.
In the first heat of the night it was Leigh who was first to the line ahead of Dale Walsh and rookie Cameron Hardwick, with the second heat going in the favour of Shaun Toulmin gaining the win from Jason Grayland and Jemma Gale. Leigh once again took the win in heat three with an identical result of the first race Walsh finishing second and Hardwick again third.
Heat four saw Grayland lead home Toulmin to claim the win with sixteen year old Tom Duynhoven home in third. In the fifth heat of the night a determined Walsh was able to hold out Leigh and Matt Clark to take the win, while the final heat of the night once again had Grayland past the flag first with Toulmin and Gale second and third respectively.
The final saw the equal high point scorers Grayland and Leigh off the front row followed by Walsh, Toulmin who were also tied on points, Duynhoven, Corey Deglaitis, Clark, Gale and Grant Stansfield. Unable to make the final was Andrew Moorfoot who was making his return to Super Rod racing however his engine suffered a blown head gasket and Cameron Hardwick with front suspension damage.
From the drop of the green Leigh was able to make the best of the start to move ahead of Grayland on the first turn, with Walsh able to hold Toulmin out for third position. Clark was making progress through the field and on lap four moved past Walsh to take over third position, two laps later he overtook Grayland to move into second position and set out in pursuit of Leigh. The leaders continued in this order to the chequered flag with Leigh once again taking the honours, Clark finished in second followed by Grayland, Gale, Walsh, Duynhoven, Stansfield, Toulmin and Deglaitis.
The Super Rods will next be in action on Saturday 13th of February for the running of the Victorian Super Rod Title at Portland’s Southern 500 Speedway.
