Sunday 24th saw the Super Rods in action in support of the second night of the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway Sungold Stadium, where Geoff Leigh continued his winning ways to greet the checker first and take the centre position on the podium.
In heat one Jason Grayland made the most of the start and jumped to the lead, however in the second lap Shaun Toulmin was able to account for Grayland and established a handy lead, Grayland was able to hold out Leigh to finish second.
The second heat was a enthralling battle for the lead as first Darryl Nelson jumping to the front with Howard Stansfield securing the lead the following lap, Stansfield held out the charge of Nelson, Leigh and Matt Clark which left many taking deep breaths as the drivers put on wheel to wheel action. It was Leigh who was able to move forward to the lead in lap six, holding out to win the heat with Stansfield second and Clark home in third.
With the highest points-scorers starting from the front it was Leigh and Toulmin making up the first row, followed by Stansfield, Nelson, Grayland, Clark, Wayne Williams, Paul Delaney, Dale Walsh, Jemma Gale, Paul Singleton, Amy Duynhoven and Damien Falkingham making up the field.
At the drop of the green it was Toulmin who was able to jump to the lead, with Leigh and Stansfield in pursuit, in the second lap Stansfield was able to move into second ahead of Leigh in lap two, Toulmin continued in the lead until the sixth lap when the car of Singleton spun leaving Williams with nowhere to go and collided with the stricken car bringing the race to a halt, at this time the car of Williams broke into flames however was quickly brought under control by the crash crew.
At the restart Toulmin was once again able to jump to the lead, with Leigh and Nelson hot on his heels, they continued in this way until the twelfth lap when Grayland was able to work his way past Nelson and into third. After many attempts to catch the leader in Toulmin, a persistent Leigh threw everything he could at the youngster however was unable to make his way past. With just two laps remaining the two leaders approached lapped traffic, it was Leigh who was able to weave his way past and into the lead and held on to greet the checker first, with Toulmin second, Grayland was able to narrowly secure third as a last ditch move by Gale saw her home in fourth, ahead of Stansfield, Delaney, Nelson, Walsh, Falkingham and Duynhoven.
The Super Rods will be in action next Saturday 30th of January at Laang Speedway.
