Saturday 2nd of January 2010 saw the Super Rods in action at Avalon Raceway, where Winchelsea local Geoff Leigh achieved a hat trick of wins claiming first position ahead of Darryl Nelson and rookie female racer Jemma Gale.

The first heat got underway with Williams leading the field, before turning his car around in the second lap bringing out the yellow. Leigh charged from the restart and led until lap seven when Nelson pounced to take over the lead to win the heat ahead of Leigh and Stansfield.

Heat two saw Adrian Rieck make the most of his front row starting position, allowing him to make a handy break from the rest of the field, with Clinten Scott leading the pursuit followed by Stansfield and Leigh. Rieck greeted the flag first with Leigh making a last ditch attempt across the line to finish second ahead of Scott.

The grid for the final saw the front row made up of Damien Falkingham, Paul Singleton, followed by Wayne Williams, Gale, Scott, Stansfield, Nelson, Rieck, Leigh, Amy Duynhoven, Cameron Hardwick, Corey Deglaitis and Shaun Toulmin rounding out the line up.
Singleton made the best of the start however after a contact with traffic saw Gale spin in the first corner brought the racing to a halt; Rieck was able to narrowly avoid damage; however Duynhoven collided heavily with the wall.

At the restart it was again Singleton to the front, however Gale was able to move her way forward and into the lead in the third lap, only to have the big mover of Leigh seize it from her in the following lap, Gale continued in second place until lap seven when Nelson was able to account for the youngster. In lap six Hardwick was working through the field and attempting to make a move on Falkingham, however he was unable to make it count and ended up a long way behind the pack.

With Leigh and Nelson making a break from the field the race to watch was between Gale and Williams, the continuous pressure for a number of laps from Williams did not unnerve Gale, however Scott was also on the charge and was able to pass both Gale and Williams but as they approached lapped cars Gale was best able to manoeuvre through the crowded track to regain third position and continued onto claim her first podium placing. Scott was an unfortunate casualty of the night as he clipped the wall and rolled his car with the chequer in sight. Leigh claimed his third feature win in a row ahead of Nelson, Gale, Williams, Stansfield, Singleton, Toulmin, Falkingham, Deglaitis and Hardwick rounding out the field.

Next Sunday 10th January will see a field of 20 cars in action at Premier Speedway’s Sungold Stadium for the 24th running of the Super Rod cup.
